Cloth

When the term ""fabric backing"" or the word ""cloth"" is used in reference to the support of a painting, it refers to the various types of cloth used in European painting, whether it be linen, hemp, silk, cotton, or synthetic materials. Starting in the 15th century the use of cloth became a fixture in European painting, gradually replacing the wooden panels used by painters exclusively until that time. The cloth is stretched over a frame and its surface is prepared with a ground layer to receive paint.
