Cleaning

The process of intervening on a paper artwork for the purpose of conservation usually starts with cleaning. When a project is cleaned, for example of dust particles stuck on its surface, the surface cleaning is done using dry methods (dry cleaning). That means special dry, soft brushes, erasers, or erasing granules are used. The goal is always to achieve the best cleaning of the work without injuring it. Sometimes, substances harmful to the paper are actually embedded within its fibers. In this case, water does not pose a threat to the paper, and the paper is washed, receiving wet cleaning. This method cleans the work more effectively, by using water alone or water combined with other chemicals to clean the fibers of the paper and remove dirt.
