Painting Laboratory

The National Gallery's Painting Conservation Department handles the maintenance of works painted on wood or cloth. Artworks in exhibition on the walls of the museum and works kept in the museum's archives receive routine maintenance. Before a conservator can start maintenance on a work it is very important to study it thoroughly, using the help of special equipment specifically available in the Painting Conservation Department, such as magnifying glasses, stereo microscopes, special lenses, etc. Also, before any maintenance is done on the work it must be photographed and / or pass through the Physicochemical Research Laboratory.
