Environment | Environmental Conditions

The environment in which artworks are kept play a vital role in their condition and in the type of problems that effect their durability. When applied to works of art, the word environment (or environmental conditions) primarily means temperature, humidity, light, and air pollution. For works of art to be preserved properly it is necessary to maintain these environmental conditions stable. Of course, each artwork, depending on its material and fabrication, is best maintained at different conditions. For this reason, the conditions in the different areas of the museum, such as the exhibition halls, warehouses, and conservation laboratories, are closely monitored. The environmental conditions are measured by special equipment, some simple and some more complex.
