Insects & Rodents

Frequently, works done on wooden supports are susceptible to wood feeding insects. High temperatures and humidity create an ideal environment for insect infestation. Tiny insects called woodworm bore tunnels within the wood. They are detectable by the small holes or dust that appears on the wood's surface as they bore through it. Over time, the wood is destroyed, and cracks or breaks are created that can reach the surface of the artwork. Small animals, like rodents, are also foes to the preservation of artwork. Rodents like mice like to eat paper works, creating a lace trim at on the edges of the paper. They prefer paper because it is an ideal building material for the construction of their nests.
