Preservation techniques for paintings

Each painting presents its own set of problems, whether big or small. However, to get the best results, whenever any conservation work is done it must be executed in a specific order: cleaning, stabilizing, protection of the image, lining, filling and retouching, and varnishing. Before conservation work begins, the conservator must ensure the elements and medium of the work will not be affected by the materials used for conservation, which is why cleaning tests are conducted first.
