Paper

Paper has many uses. Traditionally used as material for the pages of books, and as an archival material for manuscripts, documents, and letters, but also as the base support for photographic paper. Paper is frequently used as the base support for drawn and painted artwork and also used to create three-dimensional works, such as paper sculptures and objects. Paper was discovered in China around 105 AD. In 751 AD the practice of papermaking spread to Arab countries, after the Chinese lost a major battle in that region. Knowledge of papermaking eventually moved westward, and in 1147 AD the secret of how to manufacture paper spread to Europe. Over a century later, in 1276, the most significant paper mill in Europe was founded in Italy, located in a town called Fabriano. In the past, paper was made from natural fibers and contained only an organic compound called cellulose. Cellulose is found in linen, cotton, hemp fibers, etc. Today, paper is made from wood pulp, which aside from cellulose also contains other organic compounds, such as lignin. Adhesives are also used in modern paper manufacture, to help produce a proper surface to the paper for writing and drawing. Photos with captions, examples from EPMAS- table follows.
