Symmetric lighting

Digital photography of works using symmetrical lighting is the first and most important step in the documentation and physicochemical study of artworks. A 45 ° angle is established by positioning the visible light sources symmetrically on the axis between the camera and the work being examined. Symmetric illumination gives general views of the work, while also providing enough detail perspective to enable the observation of individual elements at a desired magnification.

  • Π.5618 E. Delacroix "Greek Fighter on Horseback"

Photography of the work under symmetrical lighting with the frame.

  • P.152 D. Theotokopoulos "Concert of Angels"

The photo of the work in symmetrical lighting captures and highlights the colors the painter used with such skill to achieve the final aesthetic result.

  • Z 329 E. Ziller "Plan of Petalious Palace - proposal"

Under symmetric lighting the poor condition of the paper support and the surface debris is visible.

  • K.157 K.Volanaki "French battleship anchored"

The photographic documentation of the work before (a), during (b) and after (c) cleaning operations can be done using symmetrical lighting.

  • P.6418 C. Moralis "Portrait Fokionos Dimitriadis"

Photographic documentation of the work during the removal of the oxidized varnish.

  • P.2082 Jacopo del Sellaio «The Virgin and Child" - detail

Detail photographs of the work, which clearly depict the cracks of the original color layers, done using symmetric lighting.

  • P.8047 Galofre y Gimenez Baldomero "Reception of roving troupe"

A great deal of sharp and detailed features of complex painting compositions can be seen under symmetric lighting.
