Elemental techniques

Elemental techniques make qualitative and quantitative determination of the elements that make up a material feasible.

Technical Spectroscopy of Plasma Induced by Laser (laser-induced breakdown spectroscopy - LIBS)
The technique of plasma spectroscopy induced by laser (laser-induced breakdown spectroscopy - LIBS) is based on the spectral analysis and recording of an optical emission produced by micro-plasma formed in the solid surface when in it receives radiation from a pulsed laser source with a typical pulse duration time of 10 nanoseconds. It is non-invasive technique, which can detect dyes and preparation materials.

Analysis by X-ray fluorescence (X-Ray Fluorescence, XRF
This non-destructive technique is based on an analysis of the spectrum of the X-ray characteristics a sample emits when irradiated with X-rays from an external source, and is used for the qualitative and quantitative determination of the sample's components.
The method is applicable in many fields of art history, since it is able to identify the elements which compose inorganic materials, such as pigments, ground materials etc.
