Pseudo-Color Infrared Imaging

Surfaces that share the same color in visible light but are actually made of different materials exhibit different behavior in the infrared region when examined by Pseudo-color Infrared processing During this process images that correspond to channels sensitive to green, red and the infrared spectral range become combined, like the blue, green and red of an RGB image. As a result, areas that display the same in the visible range but differently in the infrared range are represented by a different color, allowing for an increased estimate of the composition of materials, surface mapping, and contents of the original image.

  • A. Tassos "Cultivation of tobacco - No 5" - detail

The pseudocolors of the infrared reveal that the female figure's skirt may contain a color mixture of cobalt blue, ultramarine, indigo and cerulean blue, while also eliminating the possible use of azurite, manganese blue, and Prussian blue. It also helped estimate that the tobacco leaves were painted using a color mixture containing yellow ocher, raw sienna, or other earthen pigment.

  • P.1108 I. Rizou "Athenian night" - detail

The pseudocolor of the infrared differentiates and "maps" the color mixtures used.

  • P.1232. K. Malea "Aswan of the Nile"

Using the pseudocolor infrared image as reference, and taking into account the relatively simple color forms and the light layering, conclusions can be drawn about the composition of the materials used. The blue pigments used could be indigo, phthalocyanine blue, cobalt blue, cerulean blue, or ultramarine, but most likely indigo was used. If green pigment has been used, it most probably contains chromium (e.g.. viridian, oxide of chromium, etc.). Earthen colors are not very likely to have been used extensively, except perhaps baked umbra. For peach tones, it is considered likely that orange or red pigments were mixed with white. The use of yellow pigments is not likely.
