Ultraviolet Reflectance Imaging

This technique uses light sources which emit radiation wavelengths in the range 10- 400 nm, i.e. in the ultraviolet region of the electromagnetic spectrum. The detector, and filters used, must allow the recording of a similar wavelength radiation reflected from the work while blocking off radiation from the visible range. This technique exploits the fact that different surfaces exhibit different absorption degrees of ultraviolet radiation , depending on their physicochemical characteristics. The image obtained is monochrome and the information provided is derived strictly from the surface of the work. Therefore,  this technique is mainly used to study the varnish surface of a work, especially when cleaning or studying faded markings.
