(a) The x-ray of this area clearly depicts an underpainting of an angel in the upper right area of the sky, whom the painter chose to cover in the final composition. (b) The same technique revealed the signature of the painter and the date on lower left of the work, both of which were also covered in the final composition of the painting. The x-ray shows that the signature is probably imprinted using a metal element (metal spike/stylus), which used to be used as a dry means of painting and drawing. The x-ray clearly depicts the network of tunnels created by woodworm.

The x-ray of the work's detail shows the areas of loss on the original paint layers, along with the metal used to mount the cloth support on the framework and work in the frame.

The x-ray of the central area of the work shows a restored break running through the wooden support, small channels and holes caused by woodworm limited to the area along the fracture, and knots scattered throughout the area of the work and the grain.
