Chemical cleaning with organic chemical solvents (ethanol, acetone, etc.) is a process that is not frequently or extensively required in the routine methodology of a paper conservation laboratory. When performed, it is limited to localized application to remove residues and stains from wax, glues, adhesive tape, etc. In contrast the application of water or even the soaking of works in a water bath, done with all appropriate precautions, are common maintenance tasks. Wet cleaning is done to remove acidity from water soluble paper.

Often, for better results, the work is wet cleaned in a shallow level bath. Immediately after application ino the bath, the solvent or liquid is rapidly absorbed through tiny holes in the container, so that impact time is minimized.

Prior to chemical/wet cleaning it is necessary to do preliminary tests on the solubility of the work's ink and color elements.
