Tangential lighting

Photography using tangential striking radiation (tangential lighting) is performed using a strong visible light source, with a light beam that strikes at an angle of about 5-10° with the surface of the work. This allows for visible analysis of the work's surface and support conservation status, along with certain aspects of the medium's application technique, such as technique of engravings and brushstroke style.

  • K.157 K.Volanaki "French battleship anchored"

Tangential lighting reveals the maintenance issues of the work's cloth support.

  • In P.3326. Savvidi "The flight to Egypt"

Photograph of the work under tangential lighting reveals the multiple issues of both the cloth support and of all the painted layers (cracks, folds, print on canvas, etc.)

  • K.1 Nikiforos Litra" Portrait Tsimpouki" - detail

Tangential lighting reveals problems with the cloth support of the work, but also conservation problems with the painted layers.

  • P.1108 I. Rizou "Athenian night" - detail

Tangential lighting reveals problems with the cloth support of the work, and also cracking of the painted layer.

  • P.3417 K. Malea "Coastal landscape"

Aside from conservation problems, tangential lighting captures the intensely textured brushstroke technique typical to the style of the painter.

  • P.43 Unknown "Virgin and Child and two angels" - details

Tangential lighting used to capture an area of the work reveals visible conservation problems in the wooden support and in the color layer, but also elements of the drawing technique used, like a view of an engraved preliminary sketch, engraved decorations, etc.
